| Becky: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to apologize in Indonesian. The conversation takes place in a restaurant. |
| Fira: It's between Ade and a server. |
| Becky: The speakers are a customer and a server, so they’ll be using formal Indonesian. Okay, let's listen to the conversation. |

| Ade: Permisi mbak, boleh minta bilnya? |
| Pelayan: Iya, tunggu sebentar. (setelah beberapa menit) Silakan... |
| Ade: Hmmm...(sambil melihat bil) Maaf mbak, ada kesalahan. Tadi saya tidak pesan jus jeruk ini. |
| Pelayan: Oh begitu... saya minta maaf. Akan saya perbaiki dulu, mohon tunggu sebentar. |

| Waitress: Oh is that so... I’m sorry. I’ll fix it, wait for a moment please. |
| POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
| Becky: Fira, do you need to pay a tip in Indonesia? |
| Fira. Yes, you do. Tipping is very common and widely practiced in Indonesia. |
| Becky: How much do you usually pay for services like hair cuts or massages? |
| Fira: In general, tipping 10% of the total bill or about Rp.20,000 to Rp.30,000 is appropriate. Some restaurants will include a 5 to 10% service charge to their bills, in which case no additional tip is necessary. |
| Becky: But it seems like it’s common to tip a waiter who serves you about Rp.10,000 to Rp.20,000 directly, even though you may have already paid a tip as a part of the bill. |
| Fira: That’s right. Also, when you’re tipping taxi drivers, usually the passengers round their bill up and let the driver keep the change. |

| KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES |
| Becky: Let's take a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first expression is.. |
| Fira: ada kesalahan |
| Becky: meaning "there is a mistake". Fira, can you break this down? |
| Fira: Sure. Ada is a verb meaning "to exist," or "there is", and Kesalahan is a noun meaning "mistake". So it literally means “There is a mistake.” |
| Becky: Like in English, you can use this phrase to point out a mistake that someone has made. |
| Fira: You can also make the mistake more specific by using the word yang meaning “which.” |
| Becky: Can you give us an example of this? |
| Fira: Sure. For example, you can say.. Ada kesalahan yang perlu diperbaiki. |
| Becky: ...which means "There is a mistake that needs to be fixed." |
| Fira: Here, I used the word yang meaning “that” or “which” then said perlu diperbaiki meaning “need to be repaired.” |
| Becky: Okay, now onto the grammar. |

| Becky: In this lesson, you will learn how to apologize in Indonesian. But first, please note that when you need to apologize to someone, it’s important to be polite, and to draw their attention first. |
| Fira: In such a case, you can say permisi meaning “excuse me.” |
| Becky: Or you can say “I’m sorry” right away too. |
| Fira: That’s right. You can use maaf, which is Indonesian for "I’m sorry," in both formal and informal situations. But remember that permisi can’t be used for apologizing; it’s only used to grab someone’s attention. |
| Becky: Is there some way to apologize more sincerely? |
| Fira: Yes, there is. You can say saya minta maaf which literally means “I ask for forgiveness.” Saya means “I”, minta is a verb meaning “to ask for” and maaf is “sorry”. |
| Becky: But there are a number of other ways to express apologies in Indonesian, such as, |
| Fira: saya mohon maaf .. |
| Becky: Which literally means “I beg for forgiveness.” |
| Fira: It’s more polite than saya minta maaf. And you can say maafkan saya which literally means “Forgive me.” |
| Becky: For deeper apologies, you can also say.. |
| Fira: Mohon maaf yang sebesar-besarnya. |
| Becky: which literally means “I apologize, as big as possible”, |
| Fira: or mohon maaf sedalam-dalamnya.. |
| Becky: which means "I apologize profusely", |
| Fira: And finally mohon maaf setulus-tulusnya, |
