POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Becky: In the dialogue, we heard about the rising prices of some commodities, such as rice and chicken. In Indonesia, the prices of these items really affect people’s lives. In fact, these are part of the nine essential commodities, right? |
Fira: That’s right. We group important staples into nine groups. For example, the first group has rice, sago, and corn, and the second one has sugar. |
Becky: Vegetables and fruits are in the third group. The fourth is beef and chicken. The fifth is cooking oil and margarine. The sixth is milk. The seventh is eggs, and the eighth is Kerosene or LPG gas. The last group is Ionized and sodium salt. These categories are all decided by the minister of industry and trading. Fira, there are always some outside factors that influence the prices of these nine essential commodities, right? |
Fira: That’s right. It’s common to see an imbalance between supply and demand, and sometimes bad weather like excessive rains, flooding or landslides may contribute to crop failure or affect distribution. In Indonesia, natural disasters are a major factor in determining market prices. |
Becky: Good to know. Okay, now onto the vocab. |

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES |
Becky: Let's have a closer look at some of the words and phrases from this lesson. In this lesson, we have.. |
Fira: sembako |
Becky: meaning "Nine essential commodities" |
Fira: Sembako is a contraction of Sembilan Bahan Pokok. Sembilan means "nine," bahan is "ingredient" or "material," and pokok is a noun meaning "staple" or "main." |
Becky: It’s a common economic word you’ll find in Indonesian media that refers to the nine most essential commodities in Indonesia. |
Fira: Right. Sometimes you may hear a shorter phrase, like just bahan pokok. |
Becky: This is a phrase that means "the main ingredient," usually used in cooking. Fira, can you give us an example talking about commodities? |
Fira: Sure. For example, you can say.. Yayasan ini akan menyumbangkan sembako bagi orang-orang yang kurang mampu. |
Becky: ..which means "This foundation will donate the nine essential commodities to those who are less fortunate." Okay, now onto the lesson focus. |
Lesson focus
|
Becky: In this lesson you’ll learn some useful expressions to help you understand everyday economic matters in a news broadcast. Our first key phrase for this lesson is… |
Fira: mengalami kenaikan |
Becky: meaning “has increased”. Fira, let 's break down this phrase to see the meaning of each word. |
Fira: Sure. This phrase has two words, and the first one is Mengalami. It could be translated as “to experience”. And the second word is kenaikan. It is made up of the root word naik, which means “to rise” or “to increase.” So altogether, we have mengalami kenaikan, |
Becky: meaning “has increased.” For this phrase, you can add words like “price,” “number,” or “amount” as a subject. For example, you can say… |
Fira: Harga mengalami kenaikan. |
Becky: “The price has increased.” |
Fira: Harga means “price.” |
Becky: Or if you want to talk about the number having increased, you can say.. |
Fira: Angka mengalami kenaikan. |
Becky: “The number has increased.” And another example is.. |
Fira: Jumlah mengalami kenaikan. |
Becky: “The amount has increased.” Great. You'll hear this phrase a lot in news about the Indonesian economy, so be sure to understand it correctly. The next phrase we have is.. |
Fira: telah mencapai |
Becky: meaning “has reached.” Fira, let 's break down this phrase to see the meaning of each word. |
Fira: Ok. Telah means “already” or “has been.” Mencapai consists of the prefix men-, and the root word capai. It means “to reach.” |
Becky: So altogether.. |
Fira: telah mencapai |
Becky: means “has reached.” Fira, can you give us some sample sentences using this phrase? |
Fira: Sure. Jumlah peserta telah mencapai 300 orang. |
Becky: “The number of participants has reached 300 people.” |
Fira: Jumlah peserta means “the number of participants” and it’s followed by telah mencapai meaning “has reached.” |
Becky: Can you give us one more example? |
Fira: Sure. Tinggi pohon telah mencapai 4 meter. |
Becky: “The height of the tree has reached four meters.” Now we have one more phrase to introduce, which is.. |
Fira: terus melonjak |
Becky: meaning “continues to soar.” |
Fira: Terus is a verb meaning “to continue.” Melonjak is a verb with the root word lonjak meaning “to rise sharply.” |
Becky: You can use this phrase to express that the price, amount, or number of something has increased sharply and continues to do so. Fira, can you give us some sample sentences? |
Fira: Sure. Harga cabai terus melonjak. |
Becky: “The price of chili continues to soar.” |
Fira: Or Harga properti terus melonjak. |
Becky: “The property prices continue to soar.” |
Outro
|
Becky: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you next time! Bye! |
