| In today’s lesson, we'll introduce you to a phrase that you'll need on several occasions! We all know you want to see the sights in Indonesia and this phrase is essential to plan your days. |
| In Indonesian "What time does it open?" is Jam berapa buka? Let’s break it down by syllable Jam be-ra-pa bu-ka? Now let’s hear it once again Jam berapa buka? The first word jam means "hour." Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time jam, jam. This is followed by berapa, which in Indonesian is "how much." berapa. be-ra-pa. berapa. So to recap here, we have Jam berapa. Literally this means "What time." Let's take a look at the last word buka which means "to open." bu-ka. buka. So altogether we have Jam berapa buka? Literally this means "What time open?" |
| It's also really important to know when places close! The worst thing to encounter is a closed sign hanging in front of a place you wanted to see! In Indonesian "What time does it close?" is Jam berapa tutup? Let’s break it down by syllable. Jam be-ra-pa tu-tup? Now let’s hear it once again. Jam berapa tutup? We already know the first two words Jam berapa, which make up the expression, "what time is it?" Let’s hear it one more time Jam berapa. This is followed by a new word, tutup, which means "to close." tu-tup. tutup. So altogether we have Jam berapa tutup? Literally this means "What time closed?" |
| In Indonesia most places are rather lacks about opening and closing times. However most shops tend to open around 8 or 9 in the morning. Most Indonesian are morning people. While the market itself can become a bustling center of activities much earlier than that, around 5AM or so. It helps to wake up early however, especially since a lot of the traditional breakfast foods which are extremely tasty are freshest first thing in the morning. Some of this food include bubur ayam or chicken rice porridge and freshly made jaja or rice cakes. |
