| Today we're going to cover a way for you to hold on to the information you get. |
| In Indonesian "Can you write this down please?" is Tolong tulis, ya? Let’s break it down by syllable. To-long tu-lis ya Now let’s hear it once again Tolong tulis ya. The first word tolong means "help" or "please do something for me." Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time. To-long. Tolong. This is followed by tulis, which in Indonesian is "to write." Tulis. Tu-lis. Now let's look at the final word ya which means "yes" or "alright." I-ya, iya. So altogether we have Tolong tulis, ya? Literally this means "Please write it for me, alright?" |
| Once you have it written down, "Can you pronounce this please." is Tolong ucapkan, ya?. Let’ break it down by syllable to-long u-cap-kan ya. Now let’s hear it once again tolong ucapkan, ya? | Remember that when you ask someone to write something down for you please hand everything with your right hand. And yet sometimes this poses a problem for people who are left handed, like myself. In my experience whenever I’ve had to write anything down in Indonesia, I accepted the pen and paper with my right hand, transferred the pen to my left hand, wrote something and then return the pen and paper with my right hand. Most Indonesian were bemuse that my ability to write with my left hand. I admit it’s rather difficult for many westerners to fully understand this. But it becomes natural overtime. |
