Indonesian Survival Phrases Lesson 32. How do you say this in Indonesian? |
In today’s lesson we'll introduce you to a phrase that will provide you with the tools to learn from the people around. Now, a dictionary is a great idea, but don't forget that you can use Indonesian to learn in a more fun and interactive way. |
For this lesson we're going to need a word, as we're going to cover "How do you say something in Indonesian?" Let's use "flower" for that something. |
In Indonesian "How do you say "flower"” is Bagaimana bilang "flower" di bahasa Indonesia?. Let’s break it down by syllable. Ba-gai-ma-na bi-lang “flower” di ba-ha-sa In-do-ne-si-a? Now let’s hear it once again. Bagaimana bilang “flower” di bahasa Indonesia? The first word bagaimana means "how." Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time. ba-gai-ma-na. bagaimana. This is followed by bilang, which in Indonesian is "to mean something." Bilang. bi-lang. bilang. So to recap here, we have bagaimana bilang. Literally this means "how do you mean." Let's take a look at the next word after our key term "flower," which is di which means "in" or "at." Di. di. After that we have bahasa, which means "language." Ba-ha-sa. bahasa. And finally we have Indonesia, which, of course, is "Indonesia." In-do-ne-si-a. Indonesia. So altogether we have Bagaimana bilang "flower" di bahasa Indonesia? Literally this means "How do you mean "flower" in Indonesian language?" |
You can also use this expression without using any English at all. To accomplish this you can use the expression Bagaimana bilang ini di bahasa Indonesia? In Indonesian this means "How do you say this in Indonesian?" Let’s break it down by syllable. Ba-gai-ma-na bi-lang i-ni di ba-ha-sa In-do-ne-si-a. Now let’s hear it once again. Bagaimana bilang ini di bahasa Indonesia? Note that we've already gone over most of these words earlier, so this will be just a brief review. The first word bagaimana means "how." Bagaimana. This is followed by bilang, which means "to mean something." Bilang. So at this point we have bagaimana bilang which again literally means “how do you mean?” Let's take a look at the next word ini which means 'this'. I-ni. Ini. Then we have di, which is the preposition meaning "'in" or "at." Di. After that we have bahasa, which means "language." Bahasa. And finally we have Indonesia, which, of course, is "Indonesia." Indonesia. So altogether we have Bagaimana bilang ini di bahasa Indonesia? Literally this means "How do you mean this in Indonesian language?" |
To ask how to say "How do you say that in Indonesian?" Simply substitute the word "that" itu for "this" ini. You should end up with this: Bagaimana bilang itu di bahasa Indonesia? |
Indonesians are enthusiastic about people who want to learn the language, especially considering the fact that some of them, especially those that work extensively in the tourism industry learn languages such as English and Japanese to make themselves more versatile in the market.
