POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Becky: Fira, what time do Indonesian stores usually open and close? |
Fira: Well.. working hours in Indonesia can be 8am to 4pm or 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, depending on the type of business. Shops usually open at 9AM and close at 9PM. |
Becky: But restaurants follow a different time schedule. For restaurants it depends, but they are normally open from 11am to 3pm for lunch and 5pm to 10pm for dinner. |
Fira: Luckily, food courts are usually open all day depending on the trading hours of the mall or shopping center they are in. You can check those if you’re eating earlier or later than the usual time. |
Becky: That’s a good tip. |

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES |
Becky: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is.. |
Fira: jadi |
Becky: Which means "therefore". It can also be used to mean "so." You simply add this word between two sentences to connect them. |
Fira: For example, you can say.. Saya tidur larut malam, jadi saya bangun terlambat. |
Becky: meaning.. "I slept late, so I’m waking up late." |
Fira: Listeners, remember that when you want to say "however," you need to use either tapi or namun. |
Becky: Okay, what’s the next word? |
Fira: Next we have.. tutup |
Becky: which means "to close,” “to cover,” or “to shut". When you talk about the action of closing an item or the condition of something being closed, you can use this word. |
Fira: You can also use this word to mean a business is closed, as in "Toko tutup pukul 8 sor" to mean "The shop closes at 8 p.m." |
Becky: Can you give us an example using this word? |
Fira: Sure. Toko ini akan tutup dalam 30 menit lagi. |
Becky: “This shop will be closed in 30 minutes.” Listeners, please note that you cannot use this word to mean "near" as in "The shop is close to my school." |
Fira: In that case, you need to use the verb "dekat" instead. |
Becky: Okay, now onto the grammar. |
Lesson focus
|
Becky: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to inquire about a business’s operating hours. There are some patterns that we’d like to introduce. |
Fira: That’s right. First we have "buka jam berapa?". |
Becky: This literally means “open at what time?”. Can you break this down, Fira? |
Fira: Sure. Buka means "to open," jam is a noun meaning "hour" or “o'clock," and berapa is an adverb meaning "how much," or "how many." berapa is an interrogative pronoun you use to ask a question that demands a number. |
Becky: You can simply say the name of the store, then use this phrase. Can you give us an example? |
Fira: Sure. Kantor pos buka jam berapa? |
Becky: “What time does the post office open?” |
Fira: Here, I used the word "Kantor pos" meaning “post office” then said "buka jam berapa?". |
Becky: Okay. Now let’s hear how to ask what time a business closes. The pattern is... |
Fira: (Noun) + tutup jam berapa? |
Becky: This literally means “close what time?”. |
Fira: Tutup means "to close," jam is a noun meaning "hour" or "o'clock," and berapa is an adverb meaning "how much," or "how many." |
Becky: Can you give us an example? |
Fira: Sure. Bank tutup jam berapa? |
Becky: means “What time does the bank close? |
Fira: Here I used the word bank meaning “bank.” |
Becky: In response, the staff will tell you what time it opens and closes. They will usually put the noun ... |
Fira: jam... |
Becky:.. meaning “hour” or “o'clock” before the number. Can you give us some examples? |
Fira: Sure. If the store opens at nine a.m., they will say "Jam sembilan pagi." |
Becky: meaning "At nine am." or literally "Nine o'clock morning." |
Fira: Or, you’ll hear "Jam tujuh malam". If it closes at 7 p.m. |
Becky: This means "At seven pm." or literally "Seven o'clock night." And next, to ask what day a business opens, you can use this simple pattern... |
Fira: (Noun) + buka hari apa? |
Becky: It literally means “open what day?” |
Fira: Buka means "to open," hari is a noun meaning "day (of the week)," and apa means "what." |
Becky: So how would you say “What day is that restaurant open?” |
Fira: Restoran is the word meaning “restaurant”, and itu means “that”. So you can say Restoran itu buka hari apa? |
Becky: To ask the opening hours for a specific day, you can use this pattern: |
Fira: Hari + (day name) + (noun) + buka jam berapa? For example.. you can say Hari Sabtu toko ini buka jam berapa? if you want to ask "What time does this shop open on Saturday?" |
Outro
|
Becky: And that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you next time! |
Fira: Sampai jumpa lagi! |
