Halo semuanya, nama saya Fira. Hi everybody! I’m Fira.
Welcome to IndonesianPod101.com’s “Bahasa Indonesia dalam 3 menit”. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Indonesian.
In the last lesson, we learned how to talk about nationality. In this lesson we’re going to talk about location, to say things like "I am in the street" or "He is in the room", so it's very useful!
When you want to know where something or someone is, you use di mana in Indonesian.
For example, when someone asks you on the phone Kamu lagi di mana? That means "Where are you at?" in an informal way, that can be used between friends.
Let's break it down.
Kamu means “You”
Lagi is a preposition, which means "In the process of..." or “At the moment”
Di is "at”
And mana, the word for "where"
All together it is Kamu lagi di mana?
[slowly] Kamu lagi di mana ?
Answering this question is very easy! You just say Aku lagi di + the place where you are.
Aku means “I” ,
Lagi is an informal way of saying “at the moment”,
Di is for “at”,
Then you add the place. So for example, you can say Aku lagi di jalan which is "I am in the street"
[slowly] Aku lagi di jalan.
Now let’s see a few other possible answers with I-
"I am at the office" would be Aku lagi di kantor.
"I am at home" would be Aku lagi di rumah.
"I am in a store" would be Aku lagi di toko.
For the formal way of asking “where are you at?”, you just need to replace the word lagi with sedang. So it will be Kamu sedang di mana? and you can answer it with Aku sedang di jalan, which means “I am in the street”.
Now it’s time for Fira’s Insights.
On the topic of Sedang or lagi, you can use this convenient question if you are lost in the street. For example Maaf, saya tersesat, boleh tanya saya sedang di mana?
This means “Excuse me, I got lost, may I ask where am I?
(One more time, slowly - Maaf, saya tersesat, boleh tanya saya sedang di mana?)
