INTRODUCTION |
Eric: Hi everyone, and welcome back to IndonesianPod101.com. This is Intermediate Season 1 Lesson 6 - A Visit to the Indonesian Dentist. Eric here. |
Fira: Halo! This is Fira. |
Eric: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to explain your symptoms to a dentist. The conversation takes place at a dentist’s office. |
Fira: It's between the dentist and Sari. |
Eric: The speakers are strangers, so they’ll use formal Indonesian. Okay, let's listen to the conversation. |
Lesson conversation
|
Dokter: Selamat siang, apa yang bisa saya bantu hari ini? |
Sari: Begini dok, gusi saya yang bagian belakang sebelah kiri bengkak dan rasanya sakit sejak semalam. Saking sakitnya, saya tidak bisa tidur semalam. |
Dokter: Baik, saya periksa dulu. Tolong buka mulutnya lebar-lebar. (setelah beberapa menit) |
Dokter: Iya benar, sepertinya ada peradangan, sehingga gusi Anda membengkak. Saya harus menusuknya dengan jarum, dan mengeluarkan nanah dari gusi. |
Sari: Apakah saya akan dibius dulu sebelumnya? |
Dokter: Untuk prosedur ini kita tidak memerlukan pembiusan. Rasanya memang akan sedikit sakit tetapi prosesnya hanya memakan waktu beberapa menit saja. |
Sari: Baiklah dok. (setelah beberapa menit) |
Dokter: Semuanya sudah selesai. Silahkan kumur mulut Anda. |
Sari: Terima kasih dok. |
Dokter: Sekarang, saya akan memberi Anda obat antibiotik untuk diminum selama 2 hari. Dan untuk mencegah kejadian yang sama, mohon gunakan benang gigi setelah menyikat gigi setiap hari. |
Eric: Listen to the conversation with the English translation. |
Doctor: Good afternoon, how can I help you today? |
Sari: Well doc, my gum on the back left side is swollen and it has been painful since last night. Because it was so painful, I couldn’t sleep last night. |
Doctor: Alright, I’ll check it first. Please open your mouth wide. (after a few minutes) |
Doctor: Yes, you’re right, seems like there's inflammation, and that’s why your gum is swollen. I have to poke it with a needle and remove the pus from the gum. |
Sari: Will I get anesthesia beforehand? |
Doctor: For this procedure we don't require anesthesia. It will definitely feel a little bit painful but the process will only take a few minutes. |
Sari: Alright, doc. (after a few minutes) |
Doctor: Everything is done. Go ahead and rinse your mouth. |
Sari: Thank you, doc. |
Doctor: Now I’ll give you antibiotics to be taken for two days. And to prevent it from happening again, please use dental floss after brushing your teeth every day. |
POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Eric: Fira, do Indonesian people often go to the dentist? |
Fira: No, they don’t! Even some of them try to avoid visiting dentists. |
Eric: Is that because dentists are expensive? |
Fira: Well, as you know, healthcare is not so cheap, especially if you don't have national or personal health insurance. But I think it’s because Indonesian people’s awareness of the importance of dental care is relatively low. |
Eric: I see. So I guess poor people and middle class people will go to a dentist only if they can't stand the pain of their teeth and gums. |
Fira: Right. Or by the time they need their tooth to be extracted. It’s common for most domestic workers in Indonesia, such as housemaids, drivers, and security guards to have never had a chance to visit dentist in their life. |
Eric: I see. Okay, now onto the vocab. |

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES |
Eric: Let's have a closer look at some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first phrase is.. |
Fira: memakan waktu |
Eric: which means “take time, time-consuming.” |
Fira: memakan waktu is made up of two words, memakan and waktu. Memakan comes from the prefix me- and the root word makan which means “to eat” or “to consume,” and waktu means “time.” memakan waktu |
Eric: You can use this phrase in formal situations. |
Fira: Right. In informal situations, we simply take out the prefix me-, so it will be makan waktu. |
Eric: Fira, can you give us an example using this phrase? |
Fira: Sure. For example, you can say.. Kira-kira prosesnya memakan waktu berapa lama? |
Eric: ..which means “Approximately how much time does the process take?” Okay, what's the next phrase? |
Fira: saking sakitnya |
Eric: which means “since it's too painful.” |
Fira: saking is a particle used to emphasize an adjective that follows it. And sakitnya consists of the root word sakit meaning “pain,” “sick,” or “ill,” and the suffix -nya. So sakitnya means “the pain.” saking sakitnya |
Eric: So altogether it means “since it was too much pain,” or “due to extreme pain.” Basically, you can use it in informal situations, but it’s also okay to use it in formal situations as well. What’s an example with this phrase? |
Fira: Here’s one.. Saking sakitnya dia harus mengambil cuti selama seminggu. |
Eric: .. which means “Due to extreme sickness he has to take leave for a week.” Okay, now onto the lesson focus. |
