Intro
|
Michael: What is the difference between kami and kita? |
Blanca: And how are they used? |
Michael: At IndonesianPod101.com, we hear these questions often. Imagine the following situation. Gundar is going to the park with his friends, and he lets his mother know. He says, |
"We're going to the park!" |
Gundar Gunawan: Kami akan pergi ke taman! |
Dialogue |
Gundar Gunawan: Kami akan pergi ke taman! |
Juniarti Gunawan: Kembali sebelum makan malam, kita makan jam tujuh hari ini! |
Michael: Once more with the English translation. |
Gundar Gunawan: Kami akan pergi ke taman! |
Michael: "We're going to the park!" |
Juniarti Gunawan: Kembali sebelum makan malam, kita makan jam tujuh hari ini! |
Michael: "Be back before dinner, we eat at seven today!" |
Lesson focus
|
Michael: Once in a while, we encounter two or more words in another language that are often translated as one word in English. This is the case with the Indonesian pronouns |
Blanca: kami and kita |
Michael: both of which can be translated in English as either "we" or "us." |
Blanca: In this lesson, we will learn the difference between these two words and how exactly they are used in Indonesian. |
[Recall 1] |
Michael: Let's take a closer look at the dialogue. |
Do you remember how Gundar says "We're going to the park!" |
(pause 4 seconds) |
Blanca as Gundar Gunawan: Kami akan pergi ke taman! |
Michael: Here, Gundar is speaking to his mother, informing her that he is going to the park with his friends. He uses the pronoun |
Blanca: kami |
Michael: to refer to him and his friends. Taking this into consideration, we can see that this pronoun functions like the English "we," which is used by a speaker to refer to them and another person or group of people that does not include the listener. In this case, the listener is Gundar's mother. |
[Recall 2] |
Michael: Now, let's take a look at our second sentence. |
Do you remember how Gundar's mother says "Be back before dinner, we eat at seven today?" |
(pause 4 seconds) |
Blanca as Juniarti Gunawan: Kembali sebelum makan malam, kita makan jam tujuh hari ini! |
Michael: Gundar's mother is reminding him to be home before dinner, and, this time, we encounter the pronoun |
Blanca: kita |
Michael: which also translates to English as "we." This time, however, the Indonesian pronoun used includes the listener, which is Gundar. |
[Summary] |
Michael: In this lesson, we learned that while the Indonesian pronouns |
Blanca: kami and kita |
Michael: are often translated into the English "we" or "us," the two have separate functions. For one, the pronoun |
Blanca: kami |
Michael: is used if the speaker is saying "we" or "us" but not including the listener. On the other hand, the pronoun |
Blanca: kita |
Michael: is used if the speaker is saying "we" or "us" including the listener. |
Expansion |
Michael: Let's take a look at a few examples starting with this one: |
Blanca: Anne, kami akan pergi ke perpustakaan sebentar. |
Michael: "Anne, we'll go to the library for a while." In this example, the speaker makes use of the pronoun |
Blanca: kami |
Michael: indicating that they're going to the library but not including Anne. Let's take a look at another example: |
Blanca: Kami belajar bersama. |
Michael: "We are studying together." In English, there would be confusion about whether the listener is included in the activity or not, but, in Indonesian, that confusion is eliminated with the use of the pronoun |
Blanca: kami |
Michael: indicating the listener is not included. Let's move on to our next example: |
Blanca: Anne, kita akan pergi ke perpustakaan sebentar lagi. |
Michael: "Anne, we will go to the library in a while." Again, the English translation may sound confusing since we don't know whether the speaker is inviting Anne to the library or is stating that they are going without Anne. In Indonesian, the pronoun |
Blanca: kita |
Michael: makes it clear that the listener is included. |
Practice Section |
Michael: Let's review. Respond to the prompts by speaking aloud. Then, repeat after Blanca focusing on pronunciation. |
