LISA:
Belum, aku belum bisa memilih buku yang cocok. |
HANA:
Buku seperti apa yang kamu cari? |
LISA:
Aku lagi cari buku tentang tata bahasa lengkap dengan latihan soal. |
HANA:

Damon: So Lisa wants to learn a foreign language. Are there a lot of grammar exercise books and other types of language learning books in Indonesia? |
Fira: Well, there are a lot of books and bookstores. But the younger generation in particular likes bookstores, because of Japanese comics. As for English books, there aren’t that many options out there. |
Damon: I see. So Indonesian people are also big fans of comics and anime. That seems to be a worldwide trend. |
Fira: Yes, but not just the ones from Japan. Superhero characters such as Batman and Spiderman from the USA are also popular with Indonesian readers. |
Damon: Back to the English books, though. Why aren’t there many options in Indonesia? |
Fira: Well, in Indonesia there is not a massive interest in foreign language books. And there is a limited number of international bookstores, they are only open in big cities like Jakarta and Surabaya. |
Damon: Well with globalisation, I’m sure there will be more interest in foreign language books and international bookstores soon! |

Damon: Let’s take a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. |
Fira: In one sentence Lisa says, Belum ketemu buku yang cocok. Damon, do you know what the word cocok means? |
Damon: Yes! It means “match” or “suit”. |
Fira: That’s great! How did you know? |
Damon: Well, based on the context, Lisa is looking for a book that matches her needs. The word can be used to express how something fits a certain thing or situation. |
Fira: For example, you want to study an English course, but since you’re also busy with work, you search for a course with flexible hours. You can say Kursus bahasa Inggris ini cocok dengan jadwal kerjaku. |
Damon: “This English course is suitable for my schedule.” I see. So it functions as an adjective. How about the word for “enough”? Is it also an adjective? |
Fira: Well, cukup can be both an adjective and an adverb. As an adjective, it’s placed before the noun. For example, Ibu itu telah menyiapkan cukup makanan untuk sarapan anak-anaknya. |
Damon: “The mother has prepared enough food for her children.” And as an adverb, it’s placed after the verb? |
Fira: Exactly! For example, Dia berlari cukup cepat untuk lomba lari jarak pendek. |
Damon: “He’s running fast enough for a sprint rally.” Now, tell me more about the verb “to study” or “to learn”. It can be used as a transitive verb as well as an intransitive verb, right? |
Fira: You mean belajar? Yes, that’s right. In the case of a transitive verb, you can say for example Dia belajar sastra Inggris. |
Damon: “He studies English literature.” |
Fira: And as an intransitive verb, Ibu meminta dia belajar lebih sebelum ujian. |
Damon: “Mother asked him to study more before the exam.” Cool. Okay, now onto the grammar. |
GRAMMAR POINT |
Damon: In this lesson, you’ll learn about the conjunction “not only...but also”. Fira, tell me about this conjunction. How did Hana use it in the dialogue to describe a book? |
Fira: Well, Hana used the conjunction tidak hanya...tapi juga to highlight the two features that particular book has. |
Damon: So, the fact that the book not only has modules to learn grammar, but also has an interactive CD to practice the skills learned. This structure is pretty much the same as in English, then. |
Fira: That’s right! Here are a couple more examples: Dia tidak hanya rajin, tapi juga sangat pintar. |
Damon: “He is not only diligent, but also very smart.” |
Fira: Dia tidak hanya terlambat masuk kelasnya, tapi juga lupa mengerjakan tugasnya. |
Damon: “Not only was he late for class, but he also forgot to do his homework. What other conjunctions are similar in meaning to “not only...but also”? |
Fira: You can also use lagipula, which can be translated as “also”, and it’s used to place emphasis on the clause. |
Damon: Where does this conjunction usually appear in a sentence? |
Fira: It’s usually placed in front of the last clause. |
Damon: For example, if you describe your recent trip to Bali, and the numerous good things you experienced there... |
Fira: ...you can say, Bali adalah tempat yang sangat indah, lagipula penduduknya sangat ramah. |
Damon: “Not only is Bali beautiful, but also the people are friendly” or for a more simplified translation, “Bali is beautiful, also the people are friendly.” |
Fira: Another example would be, Mobil ini sangat irit bahan bakar, lagipula harganya tidak terlalu mahal. |
Damon: “This car is not only fuel efficient, but also not too expensive” or “This car is fuel efficient, and also not too expensive.” |
