| Fira: In this lesson, we’ll do something a little different from the previous ones. |
| Gina: That’s right, we’re going to have a quiz! But don’t worry, because it’ll be fun. The questions are all going to be facts about Indonesia. |
| Fira: Yes, let’s see how much you know about the country whose language you’re studying! Are you ready, Gina? |

| Fira: How many provinces does Indonesia have? |

| Fira: Correct! Indonesia has thirty-four provinces! So, do you know which one has the most people? |
| Gina: Well, I’m going to guess Jakarta. |
| Fira: Nope! Sorry! It’s actually the province of Jawa Barat, also known as West Java, which is right next to Jakarta. It has a population of 35.7 million people. |
| Gina: Whoa! That’s huge! How about the biggest province in terms of land size? |
| Fira: That would be Papua, the easternmost province. It’s nearly double the size of the second biggest province, Kalimantan Timur, also known as East Kalimantan. |
| Gina: What about Jakarta, then? |
| Fira: Actually, Jakarta is the thirteenth smallest province out of thirty-four provinces. |
| Gina: Oh, I was way off. Okay, now let’s move on to the next question. |

| Fira: Which cultural activity is from the island of Bali? |
| A) Kecak |
| B) Reog |
| C) Tari Piring. |

| Gina: Hmm.. this question is difficult... but I’ll take a wild guess and go with A. Kecak? |
| Fira: That’s right! Good guessing! Kecak or "the Monkey Chant", is a recent creation modeled from older healing dance rites known as sanghyang. |
| Gina: Ah, I see. What about the other two cultural activities? |
| Fira: Reog is from Java. It’s a ritual performance with dancers wearing masks that can weigh up to sixty kilograms. Its origins are from the village of Ponorogo, in East Java. |
| Gina: Ouch! Sixty kilograms?! How does your neck not break? |
| Fira: Haha, I guess it takes some getting use to. The last activity, Tari Piring, is the "plate dance" from Sumatra. |
| Gina: Wow, sounds cool! Okay, let’s move on to the next question, which is about travel. |

| Gina: Hmm...Let’s see…Borobudur is located near Yogyakarta in the central part of Java, and Mt. Bromo is in East Java. So the answer must be Pura Besakih! |
| Fira: Nice work! Pura Besakih, or "the Mother Temple", is not in Java. It’s in the eastern part of Bali. Gina, have you ever been to Pura Besakih? |
| Gina: No, I haven’t. What’s it like? |
| Fira: It’s a complex made up of twenty-two temples that sit on parallel ridges at the slopes of Mount Agung. It’s also the most important, the largest, and the holiest temple of Hindu religion in Bali. |
| Gina: Wow! I’d love to go there someday. Okay, now let’s go on to an economics question. |

| What is the national currency of Indonesia? |

| Gina: That’s an easy one. It’s the Rupiah! |
| Fira: That’s right. The abbreviation of the currency is "Rp". By the way, Gina, do you know how many Rupiah you get for one US dollar |
| Gina: I think it’s around 9,700 Rupiah per US dollar. |
| Fira: Yes. It’s almost Rp10,000 per dollar! So don’t be surprised when you see price tags in Indonesia. It’s not really that much money! |
| Gina: Okay, now the next one is a true/false question! |
| Fira: Right. This time we are going to debunk a myth about Indonesia. |

| Fira: Indonesia is another name for Bali. True or false? |
| ------------------------------------- |
| Gina: For sure, that’s false. |
| Fira: You’re correct! Although Bali is one of the most popular places in Indonesia, it’s only one of over 17,000 islands in Indonesia! |
| Gina: Right. Bali is an island about the size of Rhode Island, and it’s so unique in many ways. |
| Fira: Yeah. First of all, most Balinese are Hindu, as opposed to the majority Muslim population in the other parts of Indonesia. |
| Gina: Second of all, the Balinese are known for being very artistic. Their culture and history is inseparable from their rich and unique art which are all evident in their traditional performances and ceremonies. |
| Fira: In fact, the Balinese don’t even have a word for “art” simply because they’re such artistic people that art exists in everything. It doesn’t need mentioning. This relates to a previous lesson where we talked about leaving out certain unnecessary words because the culture itself can explain it. |
